The Graduate Thesis/Dissertation Template
|
|
|
The Graduate Thesis Template began
when
graduate students asked for help in formatting their theses/dissertations according to APA and SFU's Library
requirements. The template has been used to format theses for students in a number of departments as well as other universities and, since 1990, it has continued to grow and evolve.
All sections of a
thesis are incorporated in the thesis template: the frontal pages (Title Page, Approval Page, Abstract, Acknowlegements, Dedication, Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures), the
Chapters (Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion), References, and Appendices; and a section for horizontal / landscaped tables has been included at the end as
well. The biggest advantage of the template is that, through formatting headings using styles, the Table of
Contents, List of Tables, and List of Figures (and any other lists, e.g., List of Maps) are generated with page numbers, automatically.
|
|
|
Other advantages are that by
using the styles to give the document its whitespace, students may continue to edit without being concerned about formatting. Chapter headings include a page break before them. All
heading styles are preformatted with the necessary before-and-after-spacing, and are forced to stay with the following paragraph. Footnotes are formatted so they stay together on the same page.
Consistency and uniformity is given throughout the document by applying the
relevant styles to the appropriate paragraphs. When a style is
modified and updated, all paragraphs to which that style is applied,
change to the newer format.
|
|
Further, students requested an instruction manual so they could save money by formatting their theses themselves. The accompanying Table of Contents
lists the topics covered in the documentation that accompanies the template and/or workshop. If time permits, other topics can be covered, such as Manipulating Tables and
Decimal Aligning Columns; Inserting
and Formatting Graphs / Images; Inserting Shapes and Text Boxes; Creating Drawings/Flowcharts; Grouping Objects. Further to this, documents that are created with the template also convert well into PDF and
HTML formats for the
web.
